שַׁבָּת

Ten sentences

Exodus 20

Timeabout 7 minutes

First, read it

Exodus 20

Read it before the notes below. They are worth more once you have your own impression of it.

Then, the idea

A mountain shakes and ten sentences are spoken to everyone at once — not handed privately to a leader to pass down.

Read them as a list of what a newly free people is asked. The first half is about God. The second half is about how you treat people: parents, life, marriage, property, truth, and finally what you allow yourself to want.

The last one is unusual. Do not covet is not about an action. It is about the appetite that comes before the action. The list ends inside a person's head.

One word of Hebrew

שַׁבָּת

shabbat — stopping, ceasing

Not 'rest' in the sense of recovering so you can work again. It means stop. One day in seven when nobody — including your workers and your animals — is a means to an end.

And one question

Nine of the ten can be checked from the outside. The tenth cannot. Why end there?

Nobody is marking this. Sit with it on the way to work.

If this one landed: How this shapes an ordinary week.
