Free, and staying free

There is no paywall here, no account to make, no trial that ends. If what you have found has been worth something to you, there is a way to help — and if it is not the right time, read on regardless. That is not a polite formula; it is how this is meant to work.

Why the word at the top is tzedakah

English gets two words where Hebrew has one. Charity comes from caritas, love — it is warm, and it is optional. Tzedakah comes from tzedek, justice. In the tradition these books founded, giving is not generosity you may feel moved to; it is something owed, and the person receiving it is not a lesser party to the transaction.

Maimonides ranked the ways of giving, and the highest was not the largest gift. It was helping someone to the point where they no longer need help — a job, a loan, a partnership. Below that came giving where neither party knows the other. Only near the bottom was giving grudgingly, though he counted that too, because a hungry person is fed either way.

So this page will not perform at you. Give if it is right for you to give, in whatever amount is nothing much to you. Your name reaches me with the payment and goes no further than that.

What it pays for

  • Keeping it up and open

Hosting, the domain, and the certificate. Small, constant, and the reason a site quietly disappears when nobody covers it.

  • Writing the rest

Every one of the 54 weekly portions is written by hand, as is each day of the path and each feast. There is a great deal more of the Bible than there is of this.

  • Keeping it free of the usual

No paywall, no account wall, no selling of email addresses, no analytics watching what you read. Those are the normal ways a site like this makes money, and none of them are in use here.

Ways to help that cost nothing

Send a page to one person who would be glad of it. That is worth more than most donations and it is genuinely how anyone finds a site like this.

Tell us when something is wrong. A verse rendering badly, a date that looks off, a sentence that reads as smug or unclear — that is real help, and it gets fixed.

Read it. A study house with nobody studying in it is just a building.
