Leviticus

The book most readers abandon, and the one that repays vocabulary most.

What is in it

Offerings, priests, purity, skin conditions, permitted food, and then the holiness code from chapter seventeen, which turns outward to how people treat each other. There is almost no narrative, and the two places where narrative does break in are both disasters.

Read as a system rather than a list, it is about what happens when something holy is placed in the middle of an ordinary camp, and what has to be managed for that to be survivable.

If you read one chapter
