Portion 42 of 54 · Numbers
מַּטּוֹת
Matot
Vows, a hard war, and two tribes who want to settle before the job is finished.
Start by reading it
Numbers 30:2–32:42
3 chapters. About 12 minutes at an unhurried pace.
Paired reading from the prophets: Jeremiah 1:1–2:3
What happens
- 01
Laws about vows: a person's word binds them, and words are treated as things that do real work.
- 02
War with Midian, and the difficult division of what was taken.
- 03
Reuben and Gad see good grazing land east of the Jordan and ask to stay.
- 04
Moses hears an echo of the scouts, and negotiates: you may settle, but you cross over and fight first.
The thing most people walk past
Moses negotiates instead of refusing
His first reaction is anger — this is the scouts all over again. But he listens to their revised offer and accepts a deal with conditions. Leadership here is not the ability to say no.
One verse to carry
your sin which will find you.
Said in a negotiation about land and obligation, not in a sermon. The Torah's warnings tend to arrive in the middle of practical arrangements.
A question to sit with
'He shall not break his word.' What would change if a promise were treated as binding as a contract?
There is no answer key. This is the part you take with you.
