Deuteronomy 29:9–30:20

2 chapters. About 10 minutes at an unhurried pace.

Paired reading from the prophets: Isaiah 61:10–63:9

What happens

  1. 01

All of you stand here today: leaders, children, wives, the stranger, the woodcutter, the water carrier.

  2. 02

And with those who are not here with us today.

  3. 03

It is not in heaven, nor beyond the sea. The word is very near you.

  4. 04

I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life.

The thing most people walk past

It is not in heaven

The Torah insists it is not out of reach, not reserved for specialists, not somewhere you cannot get to. In your mouth and in your heart, that thou mayest do it. That is a claim about who this book is for.

One verse to carry

But the word is very nigh unto thee, in thy mouth, and in thy heart, that thou mayest do it.
Deuteronomy 30:14

If you have ever felt that the Bible belongs to experts, this verse was written against that idea.

A question to sit with

'Choose life' is spoken to people who have already been told what is right. Why does the text think the choosing still needs saying?

There is no answer key. This is the part you take with you.
