Start by reading it

Exodus 25:1–27:19

3 chapters. About 12 minutes at an unhurried pace.

Paired reading from the prophets: 1 Kings 5:26–6:13

What happens

  1. 01

Take an offering from everyone whose heart makes them willing.

  2. 02

Gold, silver, bronze, blue and purple yarn, skins, oil, spices, stones.

  3. 03

Detailed instructions for the ark, the table, the lampstand and the tent itself.

  4. 04

Everything is portable. The whole structure is built to be taken down and carried.

The thing most people walk past

That I may dwell among them

The stated purpose is not 'that I may dwell in it' but 'among them'. The building is a means. The point is presence with people, and the structure is designed to move wherever they go.

One verse to carry

And let them make Me a sanctuary, that I may dwell among them.
Exodus 25:8

The line that turns a construction manual into a theology. God asks for a place among people, and asks them to build it.

A question to sit with

Only willing gifts were accepted. Why would a project this important refuse anything given under pressure?
