Portion 22 of 54 · Exodus
וַיַּקְהֵל
Vayakhel
The same people who built the calf now build the sanctuary, and bring so much that they have to be told to stop.
Start by reading it
Exodus 35:1–38:20
4 chapters. About 16 minutes at an unhurried pace.
Paired reading from the prophets: 1 Kings 7:40–50
What happens
- 01
Moses gathers everyone and starts with the Sabbath, before any building begins.
- 02
Gifts come in from everyone whose heart stirred them, women and men.
- 03
Bezalel and Oholiab are named as the craftsmen, filled with skill and understanding.
- 04
The people bring more than enough, and are restrained from bringing more.
The thing most people walk past
Rest comes before work
The instruction to keep the Sabbath is placed at the head of the building project. Even the holiest construction in the Bible stops one day in seven. Nothing is urgent enough to cancel it.
One verse to carry
So the people were restrained from bringing.
Six words that quietly reverse the golden calf. The same generosity that made an idol builds a sanctuary.
A question to sit with
'The people bring much more than enough.' When did you last see a project have to ask people to stop giving?
