Portion 28 of 54 · Leviticus
מְצֹרָע
Metzora
How someone shut out is brought back in — a whole ceremony for return.
Start by reading it
Leviticus 14:1–15:33
2 chapters. About 10 minutes at an unhurried pace.
Paired reading from the prophets: 2 Kings 7:3–20
What happens
- 01
The priest goes outside the camp to the person. Nobody waits for them to come back alone.
- 02
Two birds; one is killed and one is set free over an open field.
- 03
Eight days of stages: shaving, washing, offerings, oil on the ear, the thumb, the toe.
- 04
Then laws for a house that is affected, and for other kinds of impurity.
The thing most people walk past
There is a ritual for coming back
The Torah spends more space on restoring the excluded person than on excluding them. It refuses to let 'outside the camp' be permanent, and it makes the return public and formal so nobody has to argue about it.
One verse to carry
And the priest shall go forth out of the camp.
The move is outward. Restoration begins with someone crossing the line to where the excluded person is.
A question to sit with
Coming back takes eight days and a ceremony. What do we lose by having no equivalent for people returning from disgrace?
There is no answer key. This is the part you take with you.
