תַזְרִיעַ
Tazria
Childbirth, skin conditions, and a priest whose main job is to look carefully and wait.
Start by reading it
Leviticus 12:1–13:59
2 chapters. About 10 minutes at an unhurried pace.
Paired reading from the prophets: 2 Kings 4:42–5:19
What happens
- 01
Laws about a woman after giving birth, and her return to the sanctuary.
- 02
A long, careful description of skin conditions and how they are examined.
- 03
The priest looks, and if it is not clear, waits seven days and looks again.
- 04
Clothes and fabrics can be affected too, and are watched the same way.
The thing most people walk past
The priest's tools are his eyes and a week
There is no cure prescribed. The whole procedure is attention, then time, then attention again. It is a religious system built around not rushing a judgement about a person.
One verse to carry
he shall dwell alone; without the camp shall his dwelling be.
A hard verse. It is worth reading alongside the fact that Miriam's whole camp waited for her rather than moving on.
A question to sit with
The person is separated from the camp but the priest goes out to them. What is the difference between exclusion and quarantine here?
There is no answer key. This is the part you take with you.
