Start by reading it
Genesis 41:1–44:17
4 chapters. About 16 minutes at an unhurried pace.
Paired reading from the prophets: 1 Kings 3:15–4:1
What happens
- 01
Pharaoh dreams of seven fat cows and seven thin ones, and nobody can explain it.
- 02
Joseph is brought from the dungeon, reads the dream, and proposes a plan for the famine.
- 03
He is put in charge of Egypt, marries, and has two sons whose names are about forgetting and fruitfulness.
- 04
His brothers arrive for food and do not recognise him. He tests them, hard.
The thing most people walk past
He tests them instead of forgiving them
Joseph has all the power and does not use it to punish or to embrace. He builds a situation that will show him whether they have changed. Forgiveness in this story is not a feeling; it is something that has to be found out.
One verse to carry
is not in me; God will give Pharaoh an answer of peace.’
Standing before the most powerful man alive, with his freedom in the balance, he refuses the credit. That is the moment his character is settled.
A question to sit with
Was Joseph right to put his brothers through this, or was it cruelty dressed as wisdom?
