וַיִּשְׁלַח
Vayishlach
Jacob wrestles all night with someone he cannot name, and walks away limping with a new name of his own.
Start by reading it
Genesis 32:4–36:43
5 chapters. About 20 minutes at an unhurried pace.
Paired reading from the prophets: Obadiah 1:1–21
What happens
- 01
Terrified of meeting Esau, Jacob sends gifts ahead and divides his camp.
- 02
Alone at the river at night, he wrestles until dawn and will not let go without a blessing.
- 03
He is renamed Israel — one who struggles with God — and his hip is put out of joint.
- 04
The brothers meet, and Esau runs to him and weeps. Then they part.
The thing most people walk past
The name of a whole people means struggle
Israel does not mean 'the obedient' or 'the favoured'. It means one who wrestles with God and with people and endures. The identity is built around honest struggle, not easy certainty.
One verse to carry
I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.
Refusing to walk away from God until something is settled is treated here as strength, not disrespect.
A question to sit with
Jacob is blessed and wounded in the same encounter, and the limp stays. What does that say about what a blessing costs?
